TRIAGE AND MASS CASUALTY - SCENE MANAGEMENT

NEW ENGLAND STANDARD CURRICULUM

Course Description:

Many communities have identified the need for mutual aid assistance from surrounding area ambulance and fire services. This back-up assistance is usually established to deal with the occasional multi- vehicle accident or structure fire. Many towns are not prepared for the large-scale event.

This program, developed and agreed upon by the New England Council for EMS, will introduce participants in the handling of a Mass Casualty Incident.

Topics include:

This program will review the day-to-day EMS system and then compare it to a Mass Casualty Incident. Problem identification of mass casualty situations will be discussed and possible solutions introduced. Triage, the sorting of patients, will be gone over in-depth. Scene Management, of the EMS response, will put into light the structure and organization of running a Mass Casualty event. This program stresses the importance of a cooperative effort between all involved parties.

This course can be offered, without certification, as part of any in- service or continuing education program. Certification is given to those participants who successfully complete student performance standards. A written evaluation and practical evolution will evaluate these standards.

A full-scale field evolution, Mass Casualty Drill, is available giving participants a chance to put to practical use, the knowledge in which they have received though the classroom.
